Why Are So Many Australians Choosing Farmhouse Living?

Why so many australians are choosing farmhouse living

Scroll through Tik Tok or Instagram,  browse home magazines or spend a few minutes on Pinterest, and you'll quickly notice one thing: farmhouse living is everywhere.

From chickens, ducks, chopping wood, sourdough to organised pantries and re-discovering grandma's cleaning tips;  the farmhouse aesthetic continues to capture the imagination of Australians from every walk of life.

But here's the interesting part.

Most people embracing farmhouse living don't actually live on a farm; and we don't either but we are surrounded by them.  We live on a quarter acre block in a semi-rural area and it's plenty big enough for us to have space, grow vegetables, have animals, create and just live the way we want to.

Many live in suburban homes, townhouses or apartments. Some have a large vegetable garden, while others grow herbs in pots on a balcony. What connects them isn't where they live—it's how they want to live.

At The Eumundi Trading Co, we believe farmhouse living has become so popular because it offers something many Australians are searching for: simplicity, warmth and a stronger connection to home. We certainly were.

Farmhouse interiors create a sense of calm through natural materials, warm colours and functional design. Timber, linen, stone, ceramics and greenery all work together to create spaces that feel welcoming rather than perfect; no matter the view out the window.

It's not about having the biggest kitchen or the newest appliances. It's about creating a home that invites you to linger over breakfast, bake on a Sunday afternoon or enjoy a quiet cup of tea at the kitchen table.

The Kitchen has become the Heart of the Home again.

For generations, the kitchen was where families naturally gathered. For me, it's where some of my fondest and funniest memories were created; Mum teaching me how to cook, Dad pretending to like my cooking, friends gathered around and peeling pancake dough off the ceiling years later.

Mum always cooked from scratch, usually sourced from one of her hand-written recipes books (our Farmhouse Journals & Notebooks are a way to recreate this) with recipes that have been handed down from Mothers, Grandmothers and friends.

My late Mum's handwritten recipe books are one of my Brothers' and I most treasured items and I still get phone calls from them asking about a recipe she made. You can see from the pictures that the pages with the most grease and food stains were the most popular things she cooked; I mean who doesn't love pikelets for breakfast on a Sunday morning!

Today, many younger Australians are rediscovering those traditions and I'm here for it!

The growing popularity of sourdough baking, homemade butter, preserving, slow cooking and seasonal cooking isn't simply nostalgia. It's a response to wanting food that feels more personal and meaningful.

Even simple rituals—setting the breakfast table, brewing loose-leaf tea or keeping butter ready to spread in a traditional butter crock—help transform everyday routines into moments worth slowing down for.

The rise of home gardening and growing your own food

One of the most noticeable changes in recent years has been the renewed interest in home gardening and growing vegetables. People are getting back into the garden and discovering the sheer joy of hours spent outside, tilling soil, planting, weeding and time away from screens and technology.

For some, it's about saving money and for others, it's about knowing where their food comes from. For me it's about the taste of the food; any home gardener will tell you how big the difference in taste is to homegrown vs supermarket.

Farmhouse living encourages us to reconnect with nature and appreciate the satisfaction that comes from growing, cooking and creating things ourselves.

Quality Over Quantity; the end of consumerism

Another reason farmhouse living continues to grow in popularity is the shift away from buying cheap and disposable plastic (toxic inks and dyes anyone?) towards buying better; quality non-toxic items that will last.

A quality timber chopping board over a plastic one.

Cotton and linen tea towels over polyester.

Homemade bread vs supermarket bread

Homemade butter vs supermarket butter or margarine

Quality stoneware and ceramics vs plastics

These aren't just purchases—they're everyday tools that become part of your family album.

Farmhouse Living Is About Feeling, a Mindset. Not Perfection

One of the biggest misconceptions is that farmhouse living requires a picture-perfect country home. In fact, from my experience it's the exact opposite of picture-perfect because living in nature comes with bugs, ants, spider, snakes, webs and dust. No matter how much you clean inside!

I had the picture-perfect house in Brisbane but living here in Eumundi feels more authentic, like this is how I was always supposed to live (it just took us years of working hard to be able to afford it!).

Farmhouse living isn't about owning acreage, raising chickens or installing a rustic kitchen overnight. It's about creating a home that feels lived in, welcoming and authentic.

It might mean baking your own bread on the weekend.

Growing herbs on the windowsill.

Lighting a candle after dinner.

Using beautiful kitchenware every day instead of saving it for special occasions.

Adding fresh flowers from the garden—or the local market—to your table.

These small choices create a home filled with warmth rather than clutter.

Why We Believe Farmhouse Living Matters

When Todd and I moved from Brisbane to Eumundi, we weren't chasing perfection.

We were looking for more space, a slower pace and a lifestyle that allowed us to reconnect with the things we genuinely enjoyed—gardening, cooking, creating and spending time together.

That journey inspired The Eumundi Trading Co.

We wanted to create a place where Australians could discover thoughtfully chosen products that support everyday farmhouse living, while also sharing practical ideas, traditional skills and inspiration that anyone can enjoy, wherever they live.

Because farmhouse living isn't reserved for country towns.

It's something you can create in a suburban kitchen, a coastal cottage, a modern home or a city apartment.

The Future of Farmhouse Living

If there's one reason farmhouse living continues to resonate, it's because it reflects a broader shift in the way many Australians want to live.

Less rushed.

Less disposable.

More connected.

More intentional.

More appreciative of simple pleasures.

Whether it's baking your first loaf of bread, planting a few herbs, sharing a slow breakfast with family or creating a home that feels warm and welcoming, farmhouse living reminds us that some of life's greatest comforts are often the simplest.

And perhaps that's why, rather than being a passing trend, farmhouse living feels more relevant today than ever before.
