There's something magical about lighting a candle. The soft flicker of the flame, a beautiful fragrance drifting through the room, and the feeling that, somehow, life has slowed down just a little.
For me, candles what makes a home feel warm, cosy and welcoming. They're lit while reading a book on the verandah, enjoying a cup of tea after dinner or creating a little ambience before friends arrive.
But not all candles are created equal.
Over the past few years, I've become far more interested in what candles are actually made from and what I'm putting into the air at home, and the truth is that the cheapest candle isn't always the best choice for your home.
Here's why I believe that candle ingredients matter and why we only stock natural beeswax or soy candles with natural fragrance:
A candle is more than just wax and fragrance. The quality of the wax, the wick and the fragrance oils all influence how cleanly a candle burns and how nice the scent is.
Indoor air quality experts recommend paying attention to candle ingredients and ensuring rooms are well ventilated while candles are burning.
Lower-quality candles can produce more soot and partical matter, particularly if they are made from petroleum-derived paraffin wax, low-quality fragrance oils or poorly matched wicks.
That doesn't mean you should never enjoy candles. It simply means it's worth choosing quality over quantity
Understanding the Different Types of Candle Wax
Soy Wax
Soy wax has become one of the most popular choices for premium candles. Made from soybean oil, it is a renewable, plant-based wax that generally burns more slowly than paraffin and typically produces less visible soot when used correctly.
Coconut Soy Wax
By combining coconut and soy wax, candle makers can create a smooth, creamy wax with an excellent fragrance throw and a long, even burn. Many premium Australian candle makers now favour coconut soy blends because they combine the benefits of both natural waxes while avoiding petroleum-based paraffin.
Beeswax Candles
Beeswax has been used for centuries and remains one of the most natural candle waxes available today. Beeswax burns slowly, produces very little soot and has a naturally subtle honey aroma.
Because beeswax is a natural product, it is often favoured by people seeking simple, traditional home products.
Paraffin Wax
Paraffin wax is the most commonly used candle wax worldwide because it is inexpensive and gives off a strong fragrance. However, paraffin is a petroleum-derived wax, and studies have shown it can produce more soot and higher levels of certain combustion by-products than plant-based waxes under similar conditions.
It doesn't mean you can't use them; just be sure to burn them outside or with plenty of ventilation to reduce indoor pollutants.
For me it really comes down to where or what I'm buying the candle for and of course, budget.
Fragrance Matters Too
If you want to ensure clean air when you are burning the wax is only part of the story because the fragrance used in a candle also plays an important role. When shopping for candles, I look for brands that clearly state they use:
- Phthalate-free fragrance oils
- High-quality fragrance blends
- Lead-free cotton wicks
- Non-toxic, cruelty-free & vegan-friendly
- Handmade
